I decided to try a one week trial membership to the Frisco Athletic Center, since my boys are on spring break. Last night my son was able to meet Goliath (as I call it) the huge indoor water slide. After one time going up the stairs, staring and climbing back down he finally went down the slide, again and again. Each time giving the lifeguards a high five as he went up. One thing I will say about this place. They put safety first, and are truly committed to the needs of their guests. My sons highlight besides the amazing pools and indoor water slide….the lifeguards.
While at the Frisco Athletic Center I could only take so many pictures and videos of my son going up and down the slide. As I sit on the sidelines watching and uploading pics for a bit, this woman comes up to me. She asked me if that little boy going up the slide was my son. Nervous as I didn’t know if my son was monopolizing the slide. I finally admitted that he was mine.
She then proceeded to tell me how kind my son was to her boy. She told me her son has autism and has been a little hesitant about going up the slide. Her son wanted to go up the slide however he is facing his fears one step at a time. Every time my son would pass her son, my son would pat him on the back and talk to him and encourage him to go a little further up the stairs to the slide. Her son did more than I ever would. The impeding fear of the height when climbing to the slide, would give me an anxiety attack. So huge kudos to him.
I was told that her son would climb an extra step and my boy would sit with him and talk and then he would go down the slide. Every time passing him doing the same, talking to his new friend and acknowledging him. I saw my son treating someone how he likes to be treated, with kindness and empathy. It was a beautiful moment and this verse came to mind.
Luke; 6:31
“Do to others as you would have them do to you.”
*Huge shout out to Megan at the Frisco Athletic Center for just being amazing with my son and his new friend. Especially with your heart and patience as they in their own time faced their fears on the slide. It was amazing to see and as a mother it was much appreciated.
One day I will write about my journey thus far in our four months of living in Frisco, Texas. Lots of changes and challenges however God’s provision has been upon us.
I don’t believe there are ever chance encounters, I believe it is always meant to be by God’s divine grace. This meeting was not just for my son it was for me too. The woman I met will be in my life and so will her family. This woman showed me grace with her words, patience and provided me with some sound profound advice which I needed to hear. Perhaps last night was not about my son battling his Goliath down the slide, or helping his friend overcome his Goliath. Perhaps I will admit to battling my own Goliath and my friend I met is helping me become my own David.

Thanks, great article.
Adrianne,
I lead marketing and communications for Frisco Parks & Recreation. Thank you for telling this beautiful story. I wanted you to know that I have passed this on to our director, Mehgan R. who you mentioned, and her supervisor. The staff at the FAC works hard to give the public a great experiences and it’s wonderful to have that validated in such a nice way. So, we are feeling good at the FAC too, because you shared your story. Thank you, and we hope to see you, your son and his new friend often!
